Remembering Eileen

October 17, 1919 Eileen Nelson entered the world, I wasn’t there, but I am sure with the same vigor and vitality that she lived the next 91 years of her life.  I was very blessed to have known Eileen and to have spent a good deal of time with her over the past ten years.

Born at the family home, Eileen spent her entire life in Fort Erie.  She attended elementary school at Rose Seaton Public School and her high school years at Fort Erie Secondary School and was a member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.

On April 15th, 1947 Eileen married the love of her life Eugene Reid.  They were happily married for 42 years until Gene died in 1989.  Together they enjoyed raising a family, golfing and serving their community.  Early on they were members at Erie Downs Golf and Country Club and they were both members of the Fort Erie Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs.  Eileen was also a member of the Sweet Adelaides in Buffalo and played bridge on a regular basis.

In the early 60’s Eileen became a member of Rio Vista Golf Club, where she golfed for many years.  Among many other awards she was the club champion in 1965, 74, 77 and 78.  In the year 2000 she became a member at Fort Erie Golf Club and that is where I got to know her.

For the next 11 years Eileen golfed every Tuesday and Thursday morning.  She was always on time, dressed to the nines and she had golf shoes to match every outfit.  Until 2005 she always walked the course.  She always managed to score lower than her age and earn at least one birdie a year.  After her golf game, Eileen always had lunch and stayed to play a game of cards with her many friends.  Among her many accolades at Fort Erie Golf she held the crown of Ms. Congeniality and in 2006 she was named Golfer of the Year.  At a surprise 90th birthday party given by the ladies of Fort Erie Golf, Eileen was made an honourary life member.

Eileen is remembered by her friends at Fort Erie as a “Lady” who loved the colour red, she enjoyed a coffee and Bailey’s and she liked a glass of red wine.  She loved her golf, a game of cards and an afternoon at the Fort Erie slots…but she didn’t like Tiger Woods.  Always a lady, Eileen did cuss once at a fellow card player, I am sure it was deemed appropriate.

Eileen hit the ball straight as an arrow and continued to do so until her last game.  In August of 2010 she had an “Off the Deck” hole in one and won a sizeable pot.

On November 4, 2010 Eileen left us from complications from a broken hip.  I can’t say that she died, as she will live with me forever.  She leaves behind her most cherished possessions, her family; her son Bill (Cindy), and her daughter Betty (Dave), her grandchildren, Kerry Lynn, Victoria and Spencer and her great grandson Liam.

Eileen always told me not to be sad when she left us, because she had a wonderful life, fabulous friends and beautiful family.  She was a genuine lady who was extremely respected.  When I think of her all I can do is smile.

A tribute for her life will be held in conjunction with the Royal Wedding on April 29th, 2011 starting at 5:30 a.m.   A dedication of a memorial bench will be presented to our “Queen Mother” after an honourary game of golf and “High Tea”.

Live      Laugh     Love
(and don’t forget to keep your head down)
